Luisão’s emotional post recalls his unexpected Benfica farewell | OneFootball

Luisão has marked the anniversary of his final Benfica appearance with an emotional message on social media.

The player said in a post that he had not realised at the time it would be his last match, adding that he could not imagine a better send-off in Benfica colours. He also thanked football.

He came on as a substitute in a 1-0 pre-season win over Sevilla on 21 July 2018 in Zurich.

Although he began 2018/19 with the squad, he announced his retirement about two months later, ending a storied spell with the club.

Across 15 seasons from 2003 to 2018, the Brazil international made 538 official appearances, scored 47 goals and provided 13 assists, winning numerous trophies and captaining the side for years.

The post drew thousands of reactions from Benfica supporters, who again paid tribute to a modern club legend.
