Luiz Araújo struck late to complete Flamengo’s 3-0 win over Madureira at the Maracanã on Sunday, his first goal of 2026 that boosts belief before the Recopa Sudamericana decider.
He scored in the 40th minute of the second half after five games without a goal. Globo.com reports that the forward delivered 13 goals and nine assists last season.
Speaking after the match, he called it the first of many and said he was happy to be back on the scoresheet and with a clean sheet. He added that focus now turns to overturning the deficit and, he hopes, celebrating at the Maracanã.
A regular starter for much of last year, in 32 of 69 appearances, Araújo is pushing for more minutes after shaking off right thigh pain and choosing to stay amid Atlético-MG interest. In a video on Instagram, he said he hopes to play even more this year.
Competition on the right has intensified in 2026, with Plata, Carrascal and Paquetá in the mix. Head coach Filipe Luís noted Araújo started in Argentina, praised his importance and hinted he could feature heavily even when not starting, citing his influence last season.
Flamengo host Lanús on Thursday at 21:30 Brasília time in the Recopa second leg. Trailing 1-0 from Argentina, they must win by two to take the trophy, while a one-goal victory forces extra time then penalties.
