Luka Modric has agreed to join AC Milan on a free transfer, with the Croatian midfielder set to sign a one-year contract after the Club World Cup in July.
The 39-year-old has announced his departure from Real Madrid, ending a 13-year spell where he won 28 major honours and established himself as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.
Milan’s sporting director Igli Tare confirmed that talks took place earlier this month and revealed that Modric was clear about his ambitions.
“The first question Luka asked me was, ‘Will we be a team built to win the championship?’” Tare told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“He has won six Champions Leagues and wants to be a protagonist from the start. His arrival is crucial for a group that needs leadership, mentality and professionalism.”
Tare added that Modric’s childhood support for Milan makes the move even more special.
“It would be great for him to have a standout season – especially with the World Cup at the end of the campaign,” he added.
The club are also in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Granit Xhaka, as they look to reinforce their midfield with a blend of experience and depth.
Modric remains in outstanding physical shape and played regularly last season. He is targeting a strong run of club form to keep himself in contention for Croatia’s 2026 World Cup squad.
After years of speculation linking Modric with a move to the San Siro, the transfer is finally happening – and Milan are banking on his pedigree and leadership to inspire their next push for trophies.
