According to reports in Italy, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Luka Modric appears increasingly likely to remain at AC Milan for another season.

The Croatian veteran is leaning towards extending his playing career with the Rossoneri rather than returning to Real Madrid in a non-playing capacity.

The 40-year-old has yet to announce a final decision, but optimism is growing in Milan that he will continue in Serie A.

Milan pushing to keep Modric

According to the report, AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale has personally contacted Modric to encourage him to stay for another season.

New head coach Ruben Amorim is also understood to have also spoken directly with the Real Madrid legend, outlining his plans for the team and the important role he would play within the project.

The club’s efforts appear to have made a positive impression on the former Ballon d’Or winner.

The report further indicates that Modric is enthusiastic about the possibility of remaining at Milan for another year.

Although the Croatian has not publicly confirmed his plans, the belief is that he is increasingly likely to continue his playing career rather than retire this summer.

Real Madrid waiting for the future

A decision to stay at Milan would postpone any immediate return to Real Madrid.

The Spanish club are understood to be interested in bringing Modric back in the near future as part of their coaching or sporting structure once his playing career comes to an end.

Following Croatia’s exit from the FIFA World Cup exit, speculation about a potential retirement for the veteran midfielder had only grown, giving way to the possibility of a return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, if Modric chooses to extend his time in Italy, that return will have to wait, with the legendary midfielder seemingly determined to continue competing at the highest level for at least one more season.

But the door for a future return remains open for Modric, who left Real Madrid in the summer of last year, bringing an end to an illustrious 13-year stint with the Spanish capital giants.
