Luka Modric has become the most decorated player in the history of Real Madrid after Carlo Ancelotti’s side beat Atalanta 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup.
Goals from Federico Valverde and marquee recruit Kylian Mbappe sealed silverware for the Spaniards, adding a record-extending sixth Super Cup success to the trophy cabinet of the European champions.
For Modric, it was a 27th winner’s medal since signing for Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013, making the Croatian the most decorated player in the club’s history.
Remarkably, Modric – who signed a new one-year deal in the summer to extend his stay in the Spanish capital – had not won a trophy in his career before moving to the Bernabeu at the age of 27.
Since moving to Real Madrid from the Premier League, Modric has won 27 trophies. This week’s UEFA Super Cup success as the midfielder’s fifth triumph in the showdown between the Champions League and Europa League winners.
He’s also won four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and a joint-record six Champions League crowns.
Kylian Mbappe revelled in the moment after scoring his first goal for Real Madrid, as the French forward secured the first European trophy of his career.
Mbappe signed for the Spanish side on a free transfer from PSG in the summer, having scored a record-breaking 256 goals for the Ligue 1 outfit.
A boyhood supporter of Real Madrid, he admitted it is an incredible feeling to finally wear the famous all-white of the 14-time European champions.
“Everyone knows how much playing for Real Madrid means to me,” the summer signing from Paris Saint-Germain said at full-time.
“It feels incredible to wear Real Madrid shirt. You say Real Madrid, you say trophies. It’s the best club in the world.”
