Leeds confirmed last week that Illan Meslier had left at the end of his contract after seven years. His farewell prompted messages from Leeds United favourites past and present. The 26-year-old departs with two Championship title-winner's medals and a spell as a Premier League regular under Marcelo Bielsa.

Meslier’s final years did not go to plan. He was dropped for Karl Darlow and did not make a first-team appearance last season.

On Friday night he posted an emotional Instagram message thanking supporters and staff. He reflected on arriving in 2019 as a 19-year-old, praised the club’s unmatched passion, and said Leeds would always be part of him as he embraces a new challenge.

Only Pascal Struijk in the current squad has been at the club longer, and teammates past and present responded. Luke Ayling told him to be proud, calling him a top player and an even better person. Stuart Dallas said it had been a pleasure and wished him well.

Current vice-captain Struijk added that it was a pleasure. Josuha Guilavogui expressed long-standing belief in him, Willy Gnonto called him a legend, and Joel Piroe wished Casper good luck. Barry Douglas, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Dani van den Heuvel also sent warm messages for the future.
