According to Sunderland Echo, Luke O'Nien has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Sport by the University of Sunderland for his impact on the city on and off the pitch.

He arrived from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018 after Sunderland had been relegated to League One. After a slow start, he became captain and played a pivotal part in the team's return to the Premier League.

He played a key role in last season's final fixture, helping to create the first goal against Chelsea that secured a Europa League place. He has made over 300 appearances, the most by any SAFC player at the Stadium of Light.

O'Nien said he was unbelievably honoured and thanked Sunderland for giving him the chance to grow as a player and as a dad. He said he would do his best to keep contributing to the Sunderland community.

He reflected that human connection matters, that everyone carries unseen challenges, and that listening without judgement can help. When people feel seen, heard and supported, he said, remarkable things can follow.

He will formally receive the honour during July 2026 graduation ceremonies at The Fire Station in Sunderland city centre. University vice-chancellor and chief executive Sir David Bell said O'Nien embodies the city's spirit and that recognising his achievements is appropriate.
