Luke O'Nien is to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Sport from the University of Sunderland. The award recognises his impact on and off the pitch.

According to Sunderland Echo, the SAFC captain will be presented during the July 2026 graduation ceremonies at The Fire Station in Sunderland city centre.

O'Nien joined from Wycombe Wanderers for the start of the 2018 season after the club’s relegation to League One. After initially struggling to nail down a place, he became captain and helped lead the Black Cats back to the Premier League.

He played a key part in last season’s final fixture, helping create the opener against Chelsea, which clinched a Europa League place. He has made over 300 appearances and tops SAFC’s list for appearances at the Stadium of Light.

He said: "I don’t think I can find the words to express what it means - I’m unbelievably honoured." He thanked supporters for the chance to grow on and off the pitch and said he would keep doing his best for the community.

He reflected on human connection, saying people often carry unseen challenges and that taking time to listen without judgement can be transformative.

Sir David Bell, the university’s vice-chancellor and chief executive, said O'Nien embodies the city’s spirit and that recognising Mr Sunderland is appropriate.
