Luke Shaw made history tonight in the Euro 2024 final as the first player to make his only start in a UEFA EURO tournament in the final since Marco Delvecchio at EURO 2000 for Italy.

Gareth Southgate selected Luke Shaw as a left-wing back in a flexible 5-2-3 formation as England bid for their first major tournament win since 1966.

Luke Shaw is accompanied by John Stones, Marc Guehi, and Kyle Walker in defence.

It meant Kieran Tripper missed out on the final.

Luke Shaw has not started a match since Manchester United beat Luton Town in February in the Premier League.

However, the United wing-back made cameo appearances in the knock-out victories over Switzerland and the Netherlands.

Memorably, Luke Shaw scored in the Euro 2020 final for England in the second minute, the fastest goal ever scored in a Euro final

Shaw is the only player in either starting XI tonight who has scored in a major international tournament final.

Southgate will be hoping for more of the same.

Spain, however, will be hoping history repeats itself from the Euro 2000 final.

Marco Delvecchio made his first start of the tournament but Italy went on to lose 2-1 in extra-time against France.
