Christoph Freund is in demand – and not only at FC Bayern. As reported in the current BILD podcast„Bayern-Insider“, the Munich sports director is a serious candidate at VfL Wolfsburg. But a change is not an option for Freund.
Christoph Freund is more than just a sporting decision-maker at FC Bayern – he is a strategic building block for the future of the record champions. Accordingly, there was a great deal of attention in recent weeks when it became known that VfL Wolfsburg had set its sights on the Austrian as a potential strong man for the sporting leadership. However, the Lower Saxony’s courtship was unsuccessful.
In the „Bayern Insider“ podcast, BILD chief reporter Tobi Altschäffl confirms: „That’s true. Wolfsburg had Freund on their list, but he’s not doing it.“
Wolfsburg are looking for a new manager to take charge of their sporting direction. Freund has been regarded as one of the most renowned squad planners in Europe for years – not least due to his successful time at RB Salzburg, where he played a key role in the discovery and development of stars such as Erling Haaland, Dominik Szoboszlai and Karim Adeyemi.

According to BILD head of soccer Christian Falk, there were talks in the background, but there was never a realistic chance of a transfer: „He feels comfortable in Munich – and is staying. That was clear relatively quickly.“
For Freund, FC Bayern is the much more attractive prospect. The club’s international reach, structural stability and work in a top sporting environment fit his profile perfectly. He also appreciates the close cooperation with sporting director Max Eberl and head coach Vincent Kompany.
The Austrian enjoys the highest esteem at the record champions. Internally, he is regarded as a calm architect, obsessed with detail and strategically precise. He is not only involved in squad planning, but also shapes scouting structures, youth projects and the club’s international network. „Freund is respected, he is highly valued. And at Bayern they see him in the long term,“ emphasizes Altschäffl.
The Munich club has a clear vision: Freund and Eberl should shape the next Bayern era together. Both are considered to be excellently networked, modern thinkers and, above all, persistent in the development of playful and structural concepts.
