The newly promoted Premier League side are in talks with the League One outfit over a potential deal for the 23-year-old, according to Mike McGrath.

Burnley were promoted last season with a record-breaking defence, conceding just 16 goals across the 46-game campaign, but have since lost one of the centre-backs who helped contribute to that, after CJ Egan-Riley departed for Marseille.

Hjalmar Ekdal has returned to the club following a loan spell last year to take up that position, but Scott Parker is looking to further bolster the backline with the former Manchester United academy product.

Mengi was brought to Kenilworth Road from Manchester United upon the Hatters' promotion to the Premier League in 2023.

Now, Luton find themselves in League One following a second successive relegation, but the 23-year-old defender may end up back in the top flight, as Burnley have started talks with the Hatters over a potential transfer, according to a report from The Telegraph's Mike McGrath.

Mengi made 30 appearances in the Premier League under Rob Edwards in 23/24, but then only managed 20 in the Championship last term due in part to a knee injury which sidelined him from November to mid-April.

In the 22 games he missed over that time, Luton won just five games and kept four clean sheets.

He started the final three games of last term, but so far this season, an ankle injury picked up in pre-season has stopped him from playing any minutes.

Additionally, Luton themselves have strengthened at the back this summer with the arrivals of Nigel Longwijk and Kal Naismith, so a deal could be sanctioned to see Mengi leave in order for his current club to recoup some money.

Luton Town fans may not lose sleep if Teden Mengi leaves for Burnley

Whilst Mengi impressed Hatters' fans under Rob Edwards in the Premier League, the 23-year-old hasn't done much over the past year to continue that feeling.

He was heavily linked with a move away this time last year to Torino, which left a sour taste in the mouths of Luton supporters who wanted players to be committed to the side ahead of the new Championship campaign, and his unfortunate injury didn't allow him to win those people back.

Now, he is once again on the shelf, and Luton have conceded just three times in League One through the opening six games, indicating that the defence can manage without Mengi this season, even if the former Manchester United youth star has plenty of qualities which make him a top operator in the third tier.

If Luton can bring some sizeable funds in for Mengi, then a sale may even be welcomed by Hatters fans, whilst Mengi would be allowed to go and play in the Premier League once more at Burnley.
