Former Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida has joined PSV Eindhoven on a one-year loan, with an option to buy believed to be around £11 million. The move back to the Netherlands was confirmed on Friday morning.
The 26-year-old spent last season at the Stadium of Light, but Sunderland did not trigger an option to buy and he returned to RB Leipzig earlier in the summer. According to De Telegraaf, Sunderland explored a permanent deal after his departure but no agreement was reached with Leipzig or the player.
In his first interview as a PSV player, Geertruida said he had carefully sought a new challenge that matched his ambitions. He wants to play at the highest level, fight for trophies, continue his development and remain in contention for the Netherlands squad, within a team offering realistic minutes and a suitable style. Conversations with Peter Bosz and PSV’s hierarchy convinced him the club met those needs.
Acknowledging his Feyenoord roots, he said he does not expect everyone to understand immediately and stressed his choice is not against his former club. He expressed gratitude to Feyenoord and said it will always be part of him.
Geertruida added that he is beginning a new chapter in Eindhoven with conviction and ambition, hoping to contribute with fighting spirit and pursue success this season. He made 30 appearances for Sunderland in all competitions.
