According to Sky Sports Germany, Sunderland will not sign Lutsharel Geertruida permanently this summer and will not trigger the buy option. He will return to RB Leipzig then is likely to move on again, with a permanent solution being sought and initial enquiries already made in Europe’s top five leagues.
The Netherlands international joined on loan from Leipzig last summer with an option to buy believed to be around £20 million. He has made 27 appearances across all competitions and has been an important contributor.
Even so, he has struggled to secure a regular place in Régis Le Bris's starting XI.
There will be a vacancy in the back four because of Dan Ballard's suspension, though it remains to be seen if Geertruida gets the nod.
Sunderland have three games remaining this season.
