After a move to Marseille collapsed, RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida is now on the verge of joining Sunderland on loan with an option to buy, according to Sky Germany. Fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest also expressed an interest in signing the Dutch defender, who is expected to leave Leipzig before today’s deadline.
Despite being fit, Geertruida hasn’t played a single minute for RB Leipzig this season in both the Bundesliga or DFB Pokal, and was a bit-part player for Ole Werner during their pre-season preparations. All signs now point to a separation after just one season at the club. The 25-year-old played 35 games across all competitions last season.
As for Sunderland’s pursuit of Geertruida, they identified the Dutchman as their priority signing after pulling the plug on a move for Club Brugge defender Joël Ordoñez, as reported via our colleagues at Get French Football News. It’s not the first time Sunderland have scouted the German market this summer with the signings of Granit Xhaka and Nordi Mukiele, both of whom played in Germany’s top flight last season.
