The 30-year-old ended the previous campaign with the Addicks after agreeing a short-term contract at The Valley, and it had been reported that Nathan Jones’ side were in talks with Dykes over extending his stay.

However, the Scotland international was focused on the World Cup going into the summer, and he featured twice for the Tartan Army as they were knocked out in the group stage.

Since then, Dykes will have been assessing his options as he prepares to return to club football, and he has now decided on his next move.

That’s after Fabrizio Romano revealed that Millwall had won the race for Dykes’ signature, as he confirmed that Alex Neil had seen off competition to convince the ex-Birmingham man to move to The Den.

Dykes will join Mihailo Ivanovic and Josh Coburn as an option as a traditional number nine for Millwall, so he will add depth and experience to Neil’s squad.

The 53-cap international has clocked up over 200 Championship appearances in his career, with his most productive spell coming during a four-year stint with QPR that began in 2020.

Dykes featured for both Birmingham and Charlton in the previous campaign, finding the net on five occasions, although most of his minutes came from the bench.

Lyndon Dykes is a sensible low-risk move for Millwall

The Londoners are looking to strengthen their squad this summer after an outstanding previous campaign, where they came third in the Championship, just missing out on automatic promotion.

Millwall were then deservedly beaten by Hull City over two legs, and there is a feeling that a lack of depth contributed to them coming up short, both in the league and the play-offs.

So, to get a player like Dykes on a free transfer is a no-brainer, and he could be ideally suited to the way that Millwall want to play.

It would be unfair to label Neil as a long-ball manager, but he does set the team up in a direct way - and the results show that it emphatically works. That will include getting the ball out to the wingers, with Femi Azeez someone who provides real quality from the right flank.

Clearly, that is going to suit Dykes’ game, as he is a major threat with his physicality, and he is also a useful option in terms of relieving pressure and bringing others into play.

With Coburn and Ivanovic at the club, Millwall weren’t in desperate need of a new number, but you always need squad players, and with Ivanovic set to miss the start of the campaign through injury, Dykes is going to be needed initially.

Therefore, there’s a lot to like about this deal for Millwall, and the fans will also enjoy the fact that they have beaten Charlton to his signature after they offered Dykes a contract earlier this year.
