Olympique Lyonnais are going to have to sell this January. The DNCG imposed a provisional relegation on the club, which should they fail to raise funds before the end of the campaign, would see them drop into Ligue 2.

However, Lyon are in the UEFA Europa League and currently riding high in Ligue 1 so there is a balance to be struck between competitivity and raising the significant amount in player sales to satisfy the DNCG. Players such as Gift Orban, Saïd Benrahma, Maxence Caqueret, and even Ernest Nuamah are on the market and will be sold in the event of reasonable offers being submitted.

Two of their most valuable assets are Malick Fofana and Rayan Cherki, but given how much they are contributing to Lyon’s success currently, they are two players that the club are reticent to sell, at least mid-season. Speaking to DAZN over the weekend, Pierre Sage evoked their futures at the club ahead of anticipated interest in January.

“Will they stay? I think so,” said Sage, with the journalist responding, “You’re not sure?” The Lyon manager added, “I am sure about thinking [that they will].” Not exactly confident but how can he be when the decision can so easily be taken out of his, and even Lyon’s hands?
