Alexis Mac Allister struck deep into stoppage time to snatch a dramatic 1-0 victory for Liverpool against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
The Argentina midfielder had already seen a goal ruled out following a VAR review before finally breaking Forest’s resistance in the seventh minute of added time, keeping Liverpool firmly in the race for a top-four finish.
The hosts started with intensity and should have led inside five minutes when Callum Hudson-Odoi burst through, only for Alisson to make a vital close-range stop.
Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson controlled the tempo in midfield, while Arne Slot's side struggled to cope with Forest’s pressing.
Virgil van Dijk was required to make a crucial recovery challenge on Igor Jesus, and Murillo tested Alisson from distance as Forest maintained the pressure. Liverpool, who lost Florian Wirtz in the warm-up, looked unsettled and lacked fluency before the break.
After the interval, the game opened up. Curtis Jones came close from close range following Mohamed Salah’s header across goal, but Forest goalkeeper Stefan Ortega produced a sharp save to keep the scores level.
Mac Allister thought he had won it late on when the ball ricocheted into the net, but VAR ruled it out for handball. However, there was no denying him moments later. Following a towering header back into danger, the midfielder reacted quickest to fire home from close range and silence the home crowd.
The result leaves Forest just above relegation zone in Vítor Pereira’s first Premier League match in charge, while Liverpool depart with three invaluable points - secured in the most dramatic fashion.
