Macaulay Langstaff has sent a message to Millwall fans after he left the club for Salford City following two years at The Den.

Millwall had a fantastic season last time out, although they ultimately came up short in their bid to reach the Premier League.

The Lions finished third in the regular campaign, with Alex Neil’s men in with a chance of automatic promotion on the final day, before losing to Hull City over two legs.

The manner of the defeat at The Den will hurt Millwall, but there’s no denying they are a club heading in the right direction, and there will be optimism that they can go one better in the 2026/27 season.

To do that, Millwall must have a productive transfer window, and work has already begun on reshaping the squad, with Macaulay Langstaff securing a move to Salford City.

There was a lot of excitement when Millwall won the race to sign the forward in the summer of 2024, as Langstaff had been incredibly prolific for Notts County in the National League and League Two.

So, there was a sense of intrigue as to how he would handle the step-up to the Championship.

It’s fair to say he has had a mixed time of things since, with Langstaff scoring just one league goal in his first season, and he managed four in the 38 games in his second one with the Londoners.

Obviously, that’s not a great return, but Langstaff brought more to the team with his work-rate and all-round game.

But, his time with Millwall is over, as it was announced on Friday that Salford had signed the player, in what is seen as a major coup for the League Two side.

And, taking to his Instagram story, Langstaff sent a message to Millwall as he reflected on his time in the capital.

Thank you to the players, staff, fans and everyone connected to Millwall for the past couple of years," Langstaff wrote.

"An incredible football club that is only going one way and it has been a pleasure to be part of it. All the best for the future.”

Millwall must add quality this summer as they look to reach the Premier League

This is a great bit of business for Salford, as Langstaff has shown that he can score goals at that level, and the reality is that it’s the right move to let him leave Millwall.

The fans will always appreciate the former Gateshead man, as he gave everything when he pulled on the shirt, which is what everyone wants, and his message to the supporters will be well received here.

But, Langstaff struggled for goals and assists in the Championship, which is what attacking players are judged on. Therefore, it makes sense for Millwall to agree to this sale, and it’s the start of what must be a ruthless window for the club.

Clearly, there is a lot of talent in Neil’s squad, and they don’t go into the window needing a major overhaul.

However, they do need to make a few tweaks, and with a deal for Mathis Servais set to be finalised, it’s a positive start to the window for the club.
