Madonna has told Celta Vigo their missing shirt is “hanging in my archives”, after the Spanish club appealed for help tracing the garment she wore on stage in 1990.
The La Liga side issued an open letter from president Marian Mourino Terrazo earlier this week, calling the top a symbol of the club’s emotional heritage and asking for assistance to find it.
Posting on X, the 67-year-old, whose full name is Madonna Ciccone, wrote: “This shirt is hanging in my archives. I am wearing and representing your team in spirit.”
Madonna performed at Balaidos on July 29 1990, where she appeared in Celta’s sky blue shirt, a moment supporters still cherish and now part of the club’s history beyond the pitch.
Before Friday’s match against Real Madrid, Celta played footage from the concert and staged a pitch show featuring a band, dancers and singers performing Like A Prayer.
The letter expressed hope of recovering the iconic garment and invited Madonna to make contact by private message to help retrieve it. Madonna is the bestselling female artist as of 2023 according to Guinness World Records, with 13 UK number one singles and 12 number one albums, and is known for hits including Like A Virgin, Holiday and Into The Groove.
