Mahmutovic: ‘Proud to remain a part of this club’ | OneFootball

Ena Mahmutovic has long since made her mark at FC Bayern Women both on and off the pitch. Two years ago, the goalkeeper took the plunge and moved from Duisburg to Munich, leaving her home behind to face the competition at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. Her start was not without setbacks due to injury, but the 22-year-old has made the most of her opportunities to establish herself as the number one at Bayern and so far win the domestic double twice, as well as two Supercups. She has now extended her contract until 2029. In an interview with fcbayern.com, the goalkeeper explains why that move felt right despite the risk, what she has learnt in Munich and which title she dreams of winning.

Interview with Ena Mahmutovic

Ena, you’ve extended your contract with Bayern. Two years ago, moving to Munich was your first step away from home. How do you look back on that decision today? Ena Mahmutovic: “At the time, it was certainly a bold, risky decision, because it could easily have gone wrong. I was at Duisburg, still young, and a move to Bayern is obviously a big step. But when a club like Bayern comes calling, you have to seize that opportunity. I was 20 years old – perhaps it was a bit early – but for me, everything turned out exactly as it was meant to. I’m very happy that I made that decision.”

What made your start in Munich easier? And how much at home do you feel in the city now? “Definitely the team. We do a lot together, and that’s made it very easy for me to settle in. I’ve made some really great friends here. Munich itself has played a part too. The city is beautiful and in a fantastic location. You can be in the mountains or by a lake in 45 minutes, and you can actually do something different every day, both in the city and out in the countryside. I haven’t quite become a Bavarian yet, but I do sometimes catch myself saying ‘Servus’ when I greet people. It’s just become second nature now [laughs].”

You’ve developed not only as a player but also as a person during your time in Munich. How would you describe this journey? “I’m very proud of the journey I’ve been on. It wasn’t easy at the start because I got injured straight away. After that, I was given my chance and proved myself with some good performances. I think I’ve developed in every area not just as a footballer but also as a person. I’ve become more mature.”

Where can we see that development on the pitch? “I’m not as reserved as I used to be and have become more confident. I’m taking on more responsibility and also coaching my teammates in front of me. I try to help them in every situation. I’ve also developed further in areas specific to goalkeeping. When you play regularly, a lot of things naturally fall into place, but it’s also down to our goalkeeping coach and the way we train.”

What sets you apart as a goalkeeper and what do you still want to work on? “One of my greatest strengths is one-v-one, when someone comes at me. I’m also two-footed and good at joining in with the play. That’s very important to me personally, because a modern goalkeeper no longer just stays on their line. I can still improve when it comes to dealing with crosses. I’ve already made good progress in that area over the past few years, but there’s still room for improvement. I’d also like to take on even more responsibility both on and off the pitch. And obviously you can always get even better at the things you’re already good at.”

Going back to 2024, if you could say one thing to the Ena from two years ago today, what would it be? “I think I’d just say one thing: Everything will turn out as it should, and the decision was the right one.”

Which three moments from your time at Bayern so far have stuck in your memory the most? “Definitely our first DFB Cup win. That was something very special for the club too. Then the Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona last season at the Camp Nou – if only because of the crowd and the atmosphere. And obviously our second DFB Cup win last season against Wolfsburg. Beating our direct rivals 4-0 was special.”

You’re now the number one at Bayern. What does that role mean to you? “A great deal. Being number one is a position that comes with a lot of responsibility. I’m proud that I’ve worked my way into this role. It’s the result of a lot of hard work and dedication. You have to earn it time and time again, especially here in Munich. That’s why I’m very proud to continue to wear this number and, more generally, to be part of the club.”

What are your goals for the years ahead? “I’d obviously like to continue developing, both personally and as a player. And I’d like to win a European trophy with Bayern. There’s only one that can be, and that’s exactly what we’re all aiming for. We want to take the next steps, reach the final and then win it. Last year, we were just two goals away from it. This season and in the years to come, we want to give it another go. And obviously we also want to defend our other titles.”
