Manchester United remain in ongoing talks with Harry Maguire to try to hash out an agreement for a new contract.

As things stand, the centre-half will pull the curtains on his Red Devils career in June unless a deal is signed.

MailSport claims that United are ‘trying to negotiate’ a reduction in his £180,000-a-week wages in order to make the financial terms more suitable for them.

In the meantime, Maguire actually rebuffed a mid-season approach from AC Milan last month, making it clear that his desire was to stay at Old Trafford and extend his stay beyond the seven-year mark.

He has enjoyed a prominent role under Michael Carrick thus far, having started every game since the former Red took the reins.

The impending return of Matthijs de Ligt following his lengthy injury layoff does prompt uncertainty over who will partner Lisandro Martinez until May – though if Carrick’s early management showings are anything to go by, he operates with a philosophy of ‘if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it’.

Carrick has made only one change to his starting XI thus far, and it’s one he was forced into after Patrick Dorgu suffered a hamstring problem in the win over Arsenal.

While Martinez and Maguire are putting in such stalwart shifts at the back, it isn’t worth intervening and potentially messing up such a dynamic pairing.

United’s No.5 isn’t the only one who’s out of contract this summer, either.

Casemiro has already confirmed that he’ll be bidding farewell to the club in June – much to fans’ dismay.

Tom Heaton is expected to be offered another short-term deal; even though he hasn’t played in a competitive match since February 2023, the hierarchy believes it’s worth keeping him amongst the squad for his influence on the younger players and goalkeeping unit.

Jadon Sancho, currently on loan with Aston Villa, and Tyrell Malacia will be departing as free agents.
