Mainz 05 have confirmed that Bo Henriksen has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.

U23 coach Benjamin Hoffmann will take charge on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is appointed.

Henriksen was put in charge in February 2024, when Mainz were in the relegation zone, and impressively led the club to Bundesliga survival.

Last season, he guided the Zerofivers to a sixth-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Conference League.

This season, however, has been disappointing, with Mainz sitting at the bottom of the Bundesliga table after just one win from 12 matches, ultimately leading to Henriksen’s dismissal.

“Mainz 05 owes Bo Henriksen a great deal. He lifted the club and the entire city out of an almost hopeless situation and, with his empathetic and passionate approach, secured Bundesliga survival and a year later even a place in the Conference League,” said sporting director Christian Heidel.

“Unfortunately, football often brings developments that make a new direction necessary for sporting reasons – even though all parties worked with full effort until the end to find solutions. Together with Bo, we realised we had reached that point, even though this separation really hurts. Bo is a fantastic coach and a wonderful person. We wish him all the very best. He has a permanent place in our hearts and history books and is always warmly welcome here.”

Henriksen added:

“Mainz 05 is a great club with many wonderful people and fantastic fans. We achieved a lot together, and I am extremely grateful for all the experiences and the time we shared. Thank you for the incredible support!

"Unfortunately, this season we were unable to play the same successful football, even though we fought for it until the very end. That’s football. I sincerely wish the club and the team all the best and will be cheering for the upcoming games and a successful season.”
