Mainz are in the final stages to sign South Korea international Hong Hyun-seok from KAA Gent for a reported €4m, according to Kicker. All formalities have been completed and the 25-year-old midfielder is expected to finalise his move to the Bundesliga club on Thursday.
Hyun-seok was absent from Gent’s 1-0 win against Partizan on Wednesday night in the UEFA Europa League Conference play-off second-leg.
The South Korean becomes the latest player to join Mainz after they announced the signing of Wolfsburg defender Mortiz Jenz on a season-long loan on Wednesday in addition to Kaishu Sano from Kashima Antlers (€2.5m), Nikolas Veratschnig from Wolfsberger AC (€800k) and Armindo Sieb on loan from Bayern Munich, while Paul Nebel returns to the club.
Hyun-seok, who played 46 games across all competitions for Gent last season, joins compatriot Jae-Sung Lee at Mainz, while the Bundesliga side are further looking to add to their squad before Friday’s deadline.
The club are working on strengthening their attack but have seen approaches for Tim Skarke (Union Berlin) and Nicolai Vallys (Brondby) rebuffed.
