Bochum’s reliable Tief im Westen fan magazine reports that former German youth international Tom Krauß is in line for a Bundesliga return. VfL Bochum are apparently set to pick up the Leipzig native on loan from Mainz 05. After Mainz, Schalke 04, Nürnberg, and his hometown club of RB Leipzig, Bochum will constitute Krauß’ fourth club in his Bundesliga career.
The 14-times-capped German youth international’s stock has dipped somewhat recently, but he remains a talented commodity. Despite being a deep-lying defensive midfielder, Krauß has scored three goals in 62 Bundesliga appearances and struck five times in 63 shifts in the German second division.
Mainz signed Krauß away from Leipzig for €4m in July 2023 after loan stints with Schalke and Nürnberg. He featured in 29 of Mainz’s 34 league appearances last season, recording one goal and registering two assists before joining Luton Town on loan in the summer.
Krauß’ time with the Hatters hasn’t necessarily been a failure. The 23-year-old scored two goals and racked up four assists in 23 EFL Championship appearances.
It nevertheless looks as if Krauß is headed for a reunion with Bochum trainer Dieter Hecking, under whom he worked at Nürnberg.
