A new significant fitness update has been issued on Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho after he appeared to have sustained a shoulder injury during Aston Villa’s friendly against Elche.

Shoulder scare

Last week, Villa travelled to Spain as part of a mid-season camp for players who did not go away with their respective countries on international duty.

Having missed out on an England call-up, Sancho made the trip and was named in the starting XI of Villa’s meeting with Elche.

However, the United star lasted just until the break as he was forced off the pitch with a shoulder issue. Sancho fell awkwardly after a challenge from Elche midfielder Gonzalo Villar.

The United man’s shoulder was then put in a makeshift sling before he was replaced by Ollie Watkins.

The Athletic have confirmed the exact nature of the problem, while also revealing how long Sancho will be sidelined and miss competitive action.

Sancho injury update

The newspaper reveals, “On loan Aston Villa winger Jadon Sancho is set to miss a minimum of two to three weeks with a shoulder injury.”

“Subsequent scans showed Sancho has not dislocated his right shoulder, but instead has a joint issue in the shoulder.”

“While there is no precise timeframe for Sancho’s return yet, Villa’s medical staff will monitor him daily and he will only return to training once there is no pain in his shoulder.”

Villa are said to be hopeful that the 26-year-old will be able to return much earlier than the initially feared six-to-eight-week timeframe.

This injury setback rules Sancho out of both Europa League quarter-final legs against Bologna and the April 12 trip to Nottingham Forest.

Sancho is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, once his contract with United expires. The Red Devils retain the option of keeping him for an extra year but they have opted against exercising it, in an effort to offload his massive wages from the books.
