Italian sources report that Cagliari and Italy striker Daniel Maldini has tested negative for drug use after his involvement in a car accident last week.

Maldini had had his driving licence confiscated after failing a breathalyser test, and initial reports in Italy suggested he had also failed a preliminary test for drug use.

The preliminary test was carried out by the Milan Local Police using a saliva swab with no legal validity, but led officers to order a blood sample to be taken in hospital.

Full examinations carried out last week highlighted that Maldini was found “below the cut-off limit”, so, as reported by Gazzetta, the Public Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the results were “not compatible” with driving under the influence of drugs.

Maldini and five other people involved in the car crash were discharged by the hospital after a few hours, having sustained no major injuries.

Maldini, 24, has scored three goals in Cagliari’s first five Serie A games of the season and has earned a call-up to the Italy national team for upcoming Nations League games.
