Christopher Nkunku has failed to live up to his lofty price tag for most of the campaign, but he showed up when Milan needed it the most and all the other forwards were sputtering, scoring back-to-back PKs against Atalanta and Genoa.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Frenchman is finishing the season much better than the more touted Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic, which could impact his future. The management was ready to cut bait in January, but he was hell-bent on staying to play his card. He’s had a very inconsistent role afterward, but he stepped up lately.
Nkunku joined Milan in a €37M move from Chelsea last summer. He has notched 8 goals and 3 assists in 33 matches across all competitions. He has mostly seen major minutes only when his teammates were absent, starting on 14 occasions.
Thanks to his recent push, the 28-year-old has gotten close to his star teammates’ overall numbers. He could wind up staying, as the Rossoneri are expected to overhaul their attack. However, it’ll depend on the coach and the directors. One of the most likely destinations, Fenerbahce, might no longer be viable since they sacked his former RB Leipzig manager Domenico Tedesco.
A couple of late spot-kicks don’t really change the outlook of his season. He was overpaid and struggled to adapt for the most part. Still, they can’t possibly sign three or four new strikers. If they plan to move on from Leao and Santiago Gimenez, he might be retained to avoid having to do too much. Plus, it’d be mighty hard to avoid taking a bath on his departure after last year’s fee
