The post-match press room at the Santiago Bernabeu was buzzing with questions, not only for Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso but also for Mallorca manager Jagoba Arrasate.

The main talking point was the series of VAR decisions that overshadowed his team’s 2-1 loss to Los Blancos.

Arrasate, however, took the opportunity to share his thoughts on the performance, the controversial decisions, and where things went wrong for his side.

He admitted that despite the defeat, Mallorca showed character but were undone in a decisive spell.

Speaking about the match, he said: “I’m happy with the match, but not with the result. It was a fateful 10 minutes in which they smelled blood. I think we could have tied the game.”

VAR calls and missed chances

Arrasate did not shy away from addressing the role of VAR in the game. He explained: “The two disallowed goals are due to the technology, and you have to trust them.

“The ones with Guler’s handball are interpretive. What surprised me was the Mendizorroza incident.

“It’s very clear, I don’t understand why it’s not corrected. It’s something we, as referees and players, have to improve on.”

Despite acknowledging the controversial moments, the Mallorca coach also pointed to his team’s ability to push for an equaliser: We had the energy to equalise. We finished well, with chances to equalise.”

But in his view, the game turned just before the break: “It was a shame because in the final minutes of the first half, the game slipped away from us.

“We were doing well until they equalized, and with that draw, we felt small. They scored two goals in one minute, and they could have scored more.”

Finally, while reflecting on the overall display, Arrasate summed it up: “Happy with the game we played offensively, although we made some mistakes defensively, and against this type of team, you pay for that.”
