Vedat Muriqi and Leo Román led Mallorca past Athletic, their self-belief decisive. As reported by as.com, the side mixed control and conviction to finish the job.
Leo Román delivered a standout exhibition in goal. Yuri, Unai Gómez, Galarreta, Guruzeta, Sancet, Vivian and Iñaki Williams were all denied, some from clear scoring positions.
Sergi Darder had his best game of the season, setting up Muriqi’s opener and dictating tempo. He later shot wide from range when seeking a fourth, then went off on 92 minutes to an ovation at Son Moix.
Valjent, captain in Raíllo’s absence, was caught for Athletic’s 1-1 when Unai Gómez got in behind. Kumbulla struggled early, took part in Athletic’s first and was booked in the 18th minute, then steadied. Morey started for the suspended Maffeo to deal with Nico Williams, losing him only once, which meant 2-2.
Samu Costa was intense and, at the first move of the second half, had a one-on-one saved by Unai Simón. Mateo Joseph battled and his pass inside led to the penalty for Mallorca’s second before he went off on 72 minutes for Antonio Sánchez, whose crosses lacked a finish. Lato started ahead of Mojica and was replaced by him on 82 minutes. Virgili did not score, his dribbling and pace caused problems, and Pablo Torre came on for him on 82 minutes.
The Kosovar delivered an outstanding performance, registering his first Mallorca hat-trick and the club’s first three-goal haul in a match since Güiza in 2008, and he even threatened to add more.
