RCD Mallorca have sacked Jagoba Arrasate after a year and a half in charge, following a third straight defeat at the weekend. They are 18th, one point from safety.
They lost 2-0 at Celta Vigo on Sunday, registering only one shot on target at Balaidos. According to Marca, Mexico assistant Toni Amor is in the frame to replace him. The 49-year-old is an islander working alongside Javier Aguirre and has previously assisted him at Leganes, Monterrey and Mallorca, plus a head coach spell at UD Ibiza.
Mallorca thanked Arrasate and his staff for their work and commitment, and outlined an intention to open a new chapter to reverse the current dynamic and face the season’s remaining challenges.
Arrasate succeeded Javier Aguirre after a Copa del Rey final run, tasked with pushing the squad towards Europe. He struggled to marry his counter-attacking approach with the back five used under Aguirre, and for long stretches they hovered nearer relegation. They eventually finished 10th, four points off Europe.
This season began with controversy as veteran Dani Rodriguez objected to Jan Virgili being used ahead of him against Real Madrid. A switch to a back four brought improvement, but inconsistency lingered. Despite Vedat Muriqi being La Liga’s second-top scorer, recent results have dragged them into the drop zone.
The 47-year-old departs with 21 wins, 15 draws and 32 defeats from 68 matches, with 69 scored and 94 conceded. His side averaged 1.15 points per game.
