Mallorca have dismissed Jagoba Arrasate, announcing at 21:50 on Monday that the coach had been removed with the team in the relegation places.

The club said in a statement that his tenure had ended following a review of the sporting situation, adding it wanted to open a new chapter to reverse the current run and tackle the remainder of the season with maximum guarantees. It thanked Arrasate and his staff for their work, professionalism and exemplary conduct, and wished them well.

A sequence of three defeats, capped by Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Celta in Vigo, proved the final straw for sporting director Pablo Ortells, who took the decision.

A successor is yet to be confirmed. Mallorca host Real Sociedad at Son Moix on Saturday at 18:30, with owner Andy Kohlberg in the directors’ box.

Arrasate will speak to the media at Son Moix on Tuesday at 12:30. His side have fallen short of pre-season expectations, showing little of the hallmarks of his teams, including front-foot ambition and intense pressing after losing the ball. He did not find the formula, barring a few exceptions.
