Giorgi Mamardashvili says a lesson from José Manuel Ochotorena, balancing ambition with patience, is shaping his Liverpool start. According to Superdeporte, the Georgian has leaned on that message while settling at Anfield.

He arrived at Valencia at 20 relatively unknown, and midway through 2021/22 José Bordalás handed him the gloves amid Jasper Cillessen’s injuries. Mamardashvili grasped the chance and ignited debate over the role for the following season.

In 22/23 he was unchallenged, excelled, and helped a troubled side secure safety late under Rubén Baraja.

The 23/24 campaign brought full consolidation and a standout Euro 2024 with Georgia alongside Kochorashvili, Mikautadze and Kvaratskhelia. That summer Liverpool paid 30 million, planning for Alisson’s future exit, though he stayed on loan for one final year before competing at Anfield.

Reflecting on Ochotorena’s counsel, he emphasised working hard and staying patient, accepting his moment may come, perhaps not this year. In his first Liverpool season he has played 11 matches across the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, while Alisson, nearing 34, will miss the last-16 tie against Galatasaray.

Ochotorena died aged 64 less than a year ago, prompting a tribute from Mamardashvili to the coach’s impact on his career and life. He has also said Ochotorena urged him to sign when Liverpool’s offer arrived, drawing on his own past with the club.
