A man has been arrested over alleged racist abuse reported during the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park on 22 March.
Northumbria Police said a 45-year-old man from the Gateshead area was detained on 31 March on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, adding that racial abuse has no place in football, that the arrest followed proactive enquiries in collaboration with both clubs and their supporters, and that it will continue working with clubs, supporters and partner agencies to tackle criminality at matches.
He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Play was temporarily halted after SAFC full-back Lutsharel Geertruida reported alleged racist abuse from the stands.
Sunderland won 2-1.
