Antoine Semenyo and Ghana’s FIFA World Cup campaign has come to an end in the last-32 of the competition at the hands of Colombia.
Colombia marched confidently into the World Cup Round of 16 after delivering a dominant performance to eliminate Ghana in the heat of Kansas City.
Despite an early setback when forward Jhon Córdoba was forced off with a groin strain just eight minutes in, Néstor Lorenzo’s side adapted instantly.
Substitute Luis Suárez made an immediate impact, driving down the right wing in the 14th minute to deliver a perfectly placed cross for Jhon Arias, who timed his run brilliantly to side-foot home a first-time volley at the back post.
Los Cafeteros completely dictated the tempo from that moment onward, routinely exposing the Black Stars’ backline while remaining completely untroubled defensively.
Though Luis Díaz saw a second-half goal chalked off for a marginal offside and Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi pulled off a string of exceptional saves to keep the scoreline respectable, the African side never looked capable of mounting a true comeback.
Ghana ultimately bowed out of the tournament without registering a single shot on target all evening, allowing a disciplined Colombia to comfortably secure a 1-0 victory and book a highly anticipated date against Switzerland in Vancouver.
