Omar Marmoush and Egypt will feature in the FIFA World Cup last-16 for the very first time thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over Australia.

Egypt made national history at the Dallas Stadium, triumphing over Australia in a tense penalty shootout to claim their first-ever World Cup knockout stage victory.

The Pharaohs broke the deadlock just 13 minutes in when Emam Ashour emphatically headed home a cross from Karim Hafez.

Despite missing a golden opportunity to double their advantage early in the second half via Omar Marmoush, Egypt looked to be in control until a cruel twist of fortune arrived in the 55th minute, as defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently deflected Aiden O’Neill’s free-kick into his own net to bring the Socceroos level.

As the match ground through a gruelling period of extra time, Australian substitute goalkeeper Mathew Ryan was subbed on to face the shootout, but Egypt’s composure proved absolute.

Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, and talisman Mohamed Salah – who successfully executed a audacious panenka despite carrying a hamstring issue – all buried their spot-kicks with precision.

After Australian defenders Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington failed to convert their respective efforts, Egyptian centre-back Hossam Abdelmaguid stepped up to calmly dispatch the decisive penalty, securing a historic 4-2 shootout win and locking in a Round of 16 clash against either Argentina or Cape Verde.
