Man City boss Maresca on Foden’s red card and derby win | OneFootball

Enzo Maresca believes Bruno Fernandes should have been sent off alongside Phil Foden during Manchester City’s 1-0 derby victory over Manchester United.

Foden was shown a red card after kicking out at the United captain, leaving City to play the rest of the game with 10 men.

Maresca accepted the decision to dismiss Foden after immediately reviewing the incident but felt Fernandes’ role in the altercation also warranted a red card.

“I reviewed the action immediately after the red card on the bench and it’s a clear red card for Phil because it’s a reaction,” Maresca said.

“But you can also see in the same action Bruno’s action, intention. So, for me, yes, it’s a red card for Phil, but it’s also a red card for Bruno.”

City were nevertheless able to secure a 1-0 victory despite their numerical disadvantage, thanks to a controversial Erling Haaland winner, and Maresca hailed the significance of winning a Manchester derby with 10 men.

“I think to win a game with ten players is already special,” he added.

“But it’s even more special when it’s a derby, Manchester derby, for the fans, for the club, for the players and also for the coaching staff.”
