Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has played down growing speculation surrounding Rodri’s future, insisting there is nothing concrete despite continued reports linking the Spanish midfielder with a move to Real Madrid.

Rodri has emerged as one of the biggest names in this summer’s transfer window following his outstanding performances for Spain at the World Cup, where he reinforced his status as one of the world’s leading midfielders.

Real Madrid are keen to bring the 30-year-old back to La Liga, but no agreement has been reached and the midfielder remains a Manchester City player.

Maresca remains calm

Speaking to the media on Friday, Maresca was inevitably asked about Rodri’s future and responded cautiously.

“For now, it’s all just speculation. Rodri underwent surgery last Monday; everything went well. Now, a few days of rest and he’ll be back with us when his vacation is over,” the new Man City boss said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

The Italian coach made it clear that his immediate focus is on the player’s recovery rather than the transfer rumours.

A key player for City’s future

Maresca also underlined Rodri’s importance to both himself and Manchester City, making it clear he hopes to have the midfielder available once he returns from his break.

“He’s very important. I said in my first press conference that any coach in the world would want Rodri because he’s a top-level player; so he’s important for me, for the club, and for everyone,” he said.

“But now, he needs to rest, which is very important when we start playing every three days.”

Maresca is preparing for his first season in charge following Pep Guardiola’s departure and could still face a busy end to the transfer window.

Despite his public comments, talks are understood to be ongoing between Real Madrid and Manchester City over a transfer for Rodri.

Reliable sources have also confirmed that the midfielder has already reached an agreement over personal terms with the Spanish capital club.

Should Rodri complete a move to Real Madrid as expected, Manchester City already have a potential replacement in mind with Ayyoub Bouaddi emerging as a leading candidate to succeed the Spanish international.
