Man City Injury Update: Haaland Fitness Question Ahead of Nottingham Forest Clash

Manchester City enter another decisive week in the Premier League title race with several fitness concerns hovering over Pep Guardiola’s squad. As Man City prepare to face Nottingham Forest, attention centres on the availability of Erling Haaland, whose presence often shapes the rhythm and confidence of Guardiola’s side.

City remain firmly in pursuit of the league leaders, and victory in midweek would narrow the gap to just two points. With that in mind, the latest Man City injury news carries particular significance.

Haaland Fitness Concern for Man City

Erling Haaland missed Manchester City’s recent trip to Leeds after sustaining a knock in training earlier in the week. The Norwegian striker had played the full match during City’s 2-1 victory against Newcastle, yet he was absent from the squad at Elland Road.

Guardiola offered a brief explanation prior to the Leeds fixture.

“Two days ago, in the last moments of training, there were some problems,” he said. “A little injury.

“It’s not a big issue, but not ready for today.”

There remains cautious optimism within the Man City camp that Haaland could feature against Nottingham Forest. Guardiola suggested improvement when addressing the situation ahead of Wednesday’s match.

“He feels much better, but yesterday we didn’t train and now we have training. We’ll decide today,” the City boss said on Tuesday.

Haaland’s return would restore a familiar focal point in attack for Man City, whose forward line looked slightly reconfigured without him. Omar Marmoush led the line against Leeds while Rayan Cherki operated out wide, an arrangement that offered energy yet lacked the inevitability that Haaland brings in front of goal.

O’Reilly Injury Adds to Man City Selection Questions

Another concern for Guardiola involves Nico O’Reilly. The versatile youngster has been one of the more intriguing elements of the Man City squad this season, appearing both in midfield and at left back.

O’Reilly limped off during the second half of the Leeds match after suffering an ankle injury. Tijjani Reijnders replaced him as Guardiola reshuffled his options.

The City manager confirmed that O’Reilly’s situation mirrors that of Haaland. He described the player’s condition as “the same”, leaving the door open for a potential return against Forest depending on the outcome of final fitness checks.

Long Term Absences Affect Man City Defence

While some players may return quickly, others remain unavailable for much longer. Josko Gvardiol suffered a broken leg during City’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in early January following an awkward collision. The £100 million defender had been a regular presence in the Man City back line before the injury and is unlikely to feature again this season.

Midfielder Mateo Kovacic is also recovering from Achilles surgery. Guardiola provided an encouraging update on the Croatian’s recovery.

“He tried to make surgery to be fit for the season and unfortunately it was not good. I spoke with him the last days and he said he feels really, really good compared to the first surgery and hopefully he can help us in the last part of the season.

“To have continuity of a game every three days will take time but as much as you can select good minutes he is a special player with special quality and mentality, another player for the biggest stages, he is so brave.

“First for his health and life to play football, that is what we want but Kova is an important player that we miss a lot.”

Squad Depth Tested Before Forest Fixture

Manchester City have also dealt with a defensive scare involving Max Alleyne. Recalled from a loan spell at Watford to help cover injuries, the young defender limped off during the FA Cup win against Salford.

Alleyne has returned to training, though he was not included in the squad for the Leeds match. His situation reflects the delicate balancing act Guardiola faces as Man City navigate the closing stretch of the season.

With the title race tightening and key fixtures arriving quickly, Guardiola will hope his squad regains full strength sooner rather than later.
