Manchester City and Newcastle United have reportedly held “explorative talks” over a potential deal for Nico Gonzalez in the summer transfer window.
The Magpies are in dire need of midfield signings after losing Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal respectively.
Despite limited gametime in the second half of last season under Pep Guardiola, Gonzalez has stated that he has no desire to leave City, who are now managed by new head coach Enzo Maresca.
“I’m happy here,” he said. “I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here.”
According to The Athletic, Newcastle are “in talks” with City over the possibility of signing Gonzalez.
The discussions are said to be “among a number of exploratory conversations taking place” as they look to reinforce their midfield before the transfer window closes.
The Tyneside outfit have already signed Aladji Bamba (20) and Sean Steur (18), but both players are considered long-term prospects.
