Makeshift defence struggles badly at Old Trafford as deflating derby defeat hits title hopes
Manchester City struggled against a re-energised Manchester United in the derby with a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
City were kept on the defensive by an intense United and fell behind to Bryan Mbeumo's 65th-minute goal.
They struggled to fight back throughout the second half, as Patrick Dorgu sealed the United victory and a perfect start for Michael Carrick, with City potentially falling nine points behind leaders Arsenal in the title race by the end of the day.
Pushed away early shots on target with ease, shutting down Dorgu chances and a rebound from Casemiro as he made several great saves. Could do little about either goal.
Rico Lewis 5
Contributed to an inexperienced backline as he came in at right-back to replace the ill Nunes. Nervy throughout, giving United plenty of opportunities to counter.
Abdukodir Khusanov 4
Forced into a mistake which gave United their first corner from which Maguire hit the woodwork, before handing the hosts yet another chance, this time for Mbeumo.
Max Alleyne 6
Provided a 37th-minute header, and City’s best chance, which was cleared off the line. Replaced at the beginning of the second half with Nico O’Reilly.
Nathan Ake 4
Drew the offside from Bruno Fernandes, preventing his 41st-minute goal, but failed to defend against Casemiro’s shot on target.
Rodri 6
Made a huge interception to prevent an Mbeumo goal after Khusanov’s mistake. Couldn’t inject any more energy into City’s performance.
Bernardo Silva 5
Had a header set up by Antoine Semenyo, but missed the target. Replaced late on.
Antoine Semenyo 6
One of City’s brighter players on the day, but failed to keep his scoring run alive.
Phil Foden 4
Set up by Haaland but failed to find the net after heavy pressure from Luke Shaw. Failed to capitalise on a corner, with United shutting it down with ease. Replaced at half-time.
Jeremy Doku 6
Was impressive in the early stages on the left, but faded quickly.
His goalless spell continues after another flat showing. Withdrawn when City were 2-0 down in a very rare occurrence.
Rayan Cherki (Foden, 46’) 5
Produced one dangerous low cross to no avail with no one on the receiving end.
Nico O'Reilly (Alleyne, 46’) 4
Immediately received a yellow after pulling back Amad.
Tijjani Reijnders (Silva, 80’) 5
Came on for Silva and tried to keep City’s hopes alive, but his dangerous cross also wasn’t turned home.
Rayan Ait-Nouri (Doku, 80’) N/A
Divine Mukasa (Haaland, 80’) N/A
Not used: Stephen Mfuni, Ryan McAidoo, Marcus Bettinelli, James Trafford.
