Manchester City moved within touching distance of their first Women’s Super League ( WSL ) title in a decade on Saturday.
Consequently, Andree Jeglertz’s side secured a dominant 3-0 derby victory over Manchester United at a chilly Old Trafford. Netherlands international Vivianne Miedema starred with two quick-fire headers in the first half.
Moreover, Kerstin Casparij added a third shortly after the interval to silence the home crowd. City now require just two more victories to confirm their status as champions.
The visitors played with a ruthless arrogance that United simply could not match. Miedema opened the scoring with a clinical header before doubling the lead just moments later.
United appeared toothless and struggled to contain the movement of Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp.
Hemp was particularly unfortunate not to score after striking the crossbar during a one-sided opening period. Furthermore, City had a goal from Knaak harshly ruled out for an alleged foul on Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
United’s performance reflected a squad currently running on empty. Marc Skinner’s team were sandwiched between two gruelling Champions League quarter-final legs against Bayern Munich.
Consequently, the lack of squad depth was evident as City’s midfield easily overran the hosts.
United have now won only two of their 13 WSL meetings with their local rivals. Following Arsenal’s 5-2 win over Tottenham, United dropped to third in the table. They face a nervous wait to see if Chelsea overtake them on Sunday.
Jeglertz’s leaders look like worthy champions. They capitalised on United’s tired decision-making with clinical efficiency. Captain Alex Greenwood anchored a defence that rarely looked troubled throughout the ninety minutes.
City fans celebrated the victory with euphoric chanting as their team reached 48 points. They next face Brighton in the league after an FA Cup tie against Birmingham City. Meanwhile, United must quickly regroup for their return leg in Germany on Wednesday.
Skinner admitted his players are making “tired decisions” against high-level opponents. For City, the party has already started in Manchester.
