Man City target Cody Gakpo but one hurdle remains for Liverpool to sanction sale | OneFootball

Manchester City have made contact with Liverpool about Cody Gakpo as they try to sign the forward before the end of the transfer window.

But Liverpool are unsure whether they can allow Gakpo to go as they consider whether City’s late move would give them time to bring in further signings.

City are looking for replacements for Savio and Omar Marmoush, who have both joined Tottenham, for an initial £75m and a loan that will become a £60m purchase respectively.

And Gakpo, like Marmoush, can play as both a left winger and a centre-forward, meaning the Netherlands international could take his role in the squad.

Liverpool have already signed one winger this summer, in Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34m, and are closing in on a second, with Paris Saint-Germain accepting a fee for Bradley Barcola in a deal worth up to £120m.

But new head coach Andoni Iraola has given indications he wants to have four wingers in his squad, after Liverpool started the season with only three. Besides Barcola, Liverpool have bid for Yankuba Minteh of Brighton and shown an interest in Ismaila Sarr of Crystal Palace.

Iraola said on Thursday that he could not guarantee Gakpo would stay but the former PSV Eindhoven player has begun both games under the Spaniard.

He scored Liverpool’s first goal under Iraola in the 2-2 draw at Newcastle and got an assist in Saturday’s draw against Nottingham Forest.

Gakpo has also attracted interest from Tottenham.
