Man City use their heads in 5-star performance over Bristol | OneFootball

After a dramatic meeting with Chelsea at the Joie Stadium last weekend, Manchester City hosted Bristol City in the Women’s Super League. Man City stormed to a 5-0 win, with all five goals coming from power headers.

The two sides met back in February in the FA Cup, with the City enjoying a resounding 8-1 win. Bristol’s latest loss keeps them at the bottom of the table, yet to get a point on the board.

Man City in header heaven

After just nine minutes, Man City took the lead as Jill Roord nodded home a failed clearance following a goal-mouth scramble. The hosts appeared to have doubled their lead just four minutes later but Bunny Shaw’s header was quickly disallowed.

City’s second goal of the afternoon eventually came in the 34th minute, as Laia Aleixandri headed in Alex Greenwood’s free-kick.

Star striker Shaw got her goal just minutes later as she capitalised on a fantastic solo run from Yui Hasegawa with yet another header. City’s fourth came shortly before halftime as Roord claimed her brace inside 40 minutes. The Dutch international headed home Mary Fowler’s cross to put the hosts firmly in control at the break.

Shaw’s second of the afternoon was the fifth of the flowing headers for Man City as the Jamaican international found the back of the net just seconds before the half-time whistle.

A quiet second half saw the hosts unable to further their lead, despite dominating much of the play. With Gareth Taylor using his full complement of five substitutions, the City head coach was able to use the victory to provide some much-needed squad rotation alongside resting several key players.

The win puts the Sky Blues top of the WSL table, having dropped just two points in their opening three games. The newly promoted Vixens have work to do as they continue their search for their first point of the season.
