After starting the post-Pep Guardiola era with a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield, Manchester City and Enzo Maresca now face Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium in their most recent meeting, a result which officially ended City’s bid for the 2025/26 Premier League title.
Bournemouth also have a different manager in the dugout this season after Marco Rose was brought in to replace Andoni Iroala.
Man City v Bournemouth kicks off at 2pm BST on Sunday, August 23 at the Etihad Stadium.
The game will be shown live in the UK via Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League, with coverage starting from 1pm.
BBC Radio 5 Live will provide full match commentary.
Jeremy Doku was substituted at half-time against Arsenal after picking up a calf injury, and Maresca has since confirmed that the winger will be sidelined for up to three weeks.
Jack Grealish replaced Doku at the Principality Stadium and is in line for a start on the left wing, while former Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo will be on the opposite flank.
Matheus Nunes missed the Community Shield defeat with a minor muscle problem, but is now available for selection and could replace Abdukodir Khusanov at right-back.
Savinho has been given permission to undergo his medical ahead of a permanent move to Tottenham, while Omar Marmoush is also the subject of heavy interest from the north London side.
Eli Junior Kroupi netted 13 Premier League goals in his debut season at Bournemouth last season, but is set to miss the opening three months of this campaign after suffering a foot injury in pre-season.
Their pre-season tour has also led to Julian Aruajo undergoing surgery on a thigh injury, while Amine Adli will be out for a few weeks after picking up a calf injury in a friendly against Real Betis.
Veljko Milosavljevic picked up an injury before the Under-19 European Championships and is yet to return to action.
Ryan Christie will also watch from the sidelines against City as he serves the final game of the suspension carried over from his red card against Fulham last season.
In more positive news, Tyler Adams has returned to training, and Rose has confirmed that the USA international is ready for 45 to 60 minutes. David Brooks and Julio Soler will also undergo late fitness tests.
Centre-back Antonio Silva arrived from Benfica in a £25million deal in the summer and is set to make his Premier League debut, partnering James Hill in the heart of the defence.
Fellow new signings Alvaro Rodriguez and Juanlu Sanchez may have to settle for a place on the bench as they’ve only just returned to team training.
Man City are favourites to win the match at 1/2. Bournemouth are 28/5 to claim a first-ever Premier League win at the Etihad, while the draw is 4/1.
Maresca’s side are 7/2 second favourites to win the Premier League title this season.
The manner of the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield and the departure of some key players raised some concerns over Man City’s ability to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
We won’t be making any rash judgements after one glorified friendly, and Maresca still has a number of top-class attacking players at his disposal.
Admittedly, pre-season has shown that there are some defensive vulnerabilities in this City side and Bournemouth will look to expose them.
But the Cherries have never enjoyed their trips to the Etihad, with Man City winning all nine of our Premier League home games against them by an aggregate score of 34-6.
That leads us to back a Man City win and both teams to score at 13/8. A repeat of the 3-1 scoreline from last season is available at 11/1.
Erling Haaland netted a brace in this fixture last season, while also scoring the late equaliser at the Vitality Stadium. The Norway international is 7/10 to get on the scoresheet against the Cherries once again.
Semenyo impressed after his mid-season move to City but has looked even better in pre-season, registering four assists across four appearances. He’s 9/2 to register an assist against his former club.
