Arsenal watch on closely as title rivals look to cut lead to two points before final week

It’s a crucial night in the Premier League title race as Manchester City take on Crystal Palace. Leaders Arsenal will be watching on with interest as their rivals contest their game in hand at the Etihad Stadium, looking to cut the gap at the top to two points with two games left to play. Pep Guardiola’s side must win this evening if they are to prevent the Gunners from potentially sealing their first championship for 22 years at home to relegated Burnley next week.

City are facing four games in 12 days during a hectic finish to the campaign as the Carabao Cup holders pursue a domestic treble, though they can’t afford to have one eye on Saturday’s FA Cup final showdown with Chelsea. Guardiola won’t be underestimating a Palace team who are looking to finish Oliver Glasner’s tenure as strongly as possible but who also have their own significant distraction in the form of the upcoming Conference League final.

Though that clash with Rayo Vallecano is now their main focus, the Eagles could yet have a major say in the destination of the title as they also host Arsenal on the final day. Follow Man City vs Crystal Palace live below!

Title race permutations as Arsenal watch on

A reminder that the title race cannot be decided tonight, whatever transpires at the Etihad Stadium.

But if Manchester City draw or lose against Crystal Palace, then Arsenal would seal their first Premier League crown for 22 years with a win over already relegated Burnley at the Emirates Stadium next Monday night.

If City beat Palace, then Arsenal cannot clinch the title against Burnley.

If City win tonight and Arsenal defeat Burnley, then City would need to beat high-flying Bournemouth away next Tuesday night to take the fight down to the final day - when they host Europa League finalists Aston Villa and Arsenal go to Palace.

In that scenario, Arsenal would go into the final day with a two-point advantage.

City will also have a keen eye on the goal difference, with theirs now only two behind Arsenal’s after brushing aside Brentford 3-0 and the Gunners beating West Ham 1-0 in controversial fashion - +40 compared to +42.

Palace could yet have a massive say in the destination of the title by facing both City and Arsenal, though have little left to play for themselves in Premier League terms as they sit down in 15th place - eight points above the relegation zone and nine adrift of the top seven.

However, they will want to finish as strongly as possible during the final weeks of Oliver Glasner’s memorable managerial tenure and go into that Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano with plenty of momentum.

Man City vs Crystal Palace prediction

There are few more frightening prospects in football than facing Manchester City during the run-in.

They have been in formidable form of late. Last week’s draw at Everton was a blip, and potentially a damaging one in terms of the title race, but they got back to winning ways in fine fashion against Brentford.

Even if Pep Guardiola opts to rotate for this match ahead of the FA Cup final, he will expect nothing less than a win. We expect the same.

Man City to win, 3-1.

Crystal Palace team news

Crystal Palace’s team news picture remains largely the same with their Conference League final showdown against LaLiga side Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig coming up on May 27.

Long-term absentees Eddie Nketiah and Cheick Doucoure remain out, while Aston Villa loanee Evann Guessand and Borna Sosa are now back in training following their respective injuries.

However, Oliver Glasner confirmed on Tuesday that neither player would be in contention for tonight, with the hope that they will both be able to return in Sunday’s trip to Brentford.

Palace will be working with the same squad as for Sunday’s eventful 2-2 home draw with Everton, in which Jean-Philippe Mateta came off the bench to rescue a late point after Ismaila Sarr had initially cancelled out James Tarkowski’s early goal.

Man City team news

Manchester City could be boosted for tonight’s must-win game by the respective returns of Rodri and Abdukodir Khusanov.

Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder Rodri has missed the last four matches with a groin injury suffered in last month’s 2-1 win over title rivals Arsenal.

Centre-back Khusanov, meanwhile, was absent from Saturday’s 3-0 home win over Brentford having sustained a knock in the costly 3-3 draw at Everton.

“Better” Pep Guardiola said of Rodri at yesterday’s pre-match press conference. “We will see in training this afternoon.”

On Khusanov, he added: “Better as well. [He took a) tough knock against Beto when he played Everton. He’s better.”

Josko Gvardiol is now back in training after being sidelined since early January with a broken leg, but has yet to return to the matchday squad.

Man City vs Crystal Palace live

Hello and welcome to Standard Sport’s live coverage of Manchester City vs Crystal Palace.

It’s another absolutely crucial evening ahead in a thrilling Premier League title race as City look to win their all-important game in hand and cut the gap to leaders Arsenal to just two points with two games left to play this season.

Victory is essential for Pep Guardiola’s domestic treble chasers tonight if they are to prevent the Gunners from potentially clinching the title at home to relegated Burnley on Monday night, before City then go to high-flying Bournemouth 24 hours later in their penultimate fixture.

They must ignore the sizable distraction of this weekend’s FA Cup final clash against Chelsea at Wembley and see off a Crystal Palace side who have one eye firmly fixed on the Conference League final and who also take on Arsenal on the final day.

Kick-off at the Etihad Stadium is at 8pm BST, so stay tuned for match build-up, breaking team news and live game updates.
