It’s a crunch match in Manchester this weekend, as Tottenham Hotspur travel to the Etihad Stadium to face a despondent Man City.

Both sides are in the midst of a challenging spell, with City losing their last four games in all competitions and Spurs languishing in tenth position in the Premier League standings.

The defending champions were handed a major boost this week, though, after Pep Guardiola committed his future to the Manchester club until 2026, signing a two-year extension on Thursday.

Kevin De Bruyne, Manuel Akanji, Jack Grealish and John Stones have all returned to training after the injured quartet were omitted from their national team squads.

Ange Postecoglou will have to do without centre-half pairing Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero tomorrow evening through injury.

Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will be serving the first game of a seven match domestic suspension after the FA punished the Uruguayan for comments made about teammate Heung-min Son a couple of months ago.

Form

Man City: WLLLL

Man City have recently endured an unprecedented run of form as they have lost four consecutive matches for the first time in Pep Guardiola’s eight-year tenure. Their losing streak began against Saturday’s opponents Tottenham as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in North London.

They couldn’t recover in time to stop Bournemouth from succeeding the following weekend before being on the receiving end of a 4-1 humiliation in the Champions League by current Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP.

The misery continued courtesy of a late comeback from Brighton as goals from Matt O’Reilly and Joao Pedro cancelled out Erling Haaland’s opener to condemn City to another loss on the South Coast.

Tottenham: LWWLL

Ange Postecoglou and Spurs will have been reeling over the international break after they suffered a surprising home defeat to Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys raced into a two-goal lead at halftime and despite Rodrigo Bentancur halving the deficit after the interval, former Tottenham youth coach Kieran McKenna and his players held on to earn their first Premier League victory since 2002.

By Postecoglou’s own admittance, the Lilywhites have really struggled for balance and consistency this campaign.

On the one hand, they have shown glimpses of quality with resounding wins over Aston Villa, West Ham and Manchester United helping them on their way to being the highest scoring club in the league this term.

But on the other hand, Spurs’ mentality has been described as weak and their defensive vulnerabilities have reared its ugly head in defeats to Brighton, Crystal Palace and Ipswich.

However, their results and performances in the cup competitions have been encouraging as they are quarter-finalists in the Carabao Cup and have collected nine points from a possible twelve in the Europa League.

Last Meeting

Tottenham 2-1 Manchester City, Carabao Cup, 30th October 2024

Tottenham again caused issues for Manchester City as they prevailed over the Citizens to advance into the last eight of the Carabao Cup.

The hosts flew out of the traps as Timo Werner finished off a flowing counterattack to give Ange Postecoglou’s side the lead inside five minutes.

Spurs’ second was a sumptuous strike from Senegal international Pape Matar Sarr as the midfielder delicately curled the ball past Stefan Ortega after being found by Dejan Kulusevski from a short corner routine.

City grew into the contest and would halve the deficit in the dying embers of the first period after Matheus Nunes was left unmarked at the back post to volley into Guglielmo Vicario’s net.

Werner spurned a glorious opportunity to extend the Lilywhites’ lead after breaking clear of the City backline but his attempt whistled past fellow countryman Ortega’s goal.

Tottenham would bravely defend a late siege on their goal to book their spot in the quarter finals.
