Manchester City beat Brighton 4-0 to win the Women’s FA Cup, and have completed a historic domestic double.
City clinched the WSL title a few weeks ago, their first since 2016, but have now made a remarkable season that much better by also lifting the Women’s FA Cup. This is the first league and couple double in their history.
Brighton started the game the better of the two teams, and had two huge chances in the first half. Marisa Olislagers was at the heart of both, but could not score the vital first goal.
Her first chance was cleared off the line by Alex Greenwood after a mix up between Jade Rose and Ayaka Yamashita saw her left with an open goal from distance, but she will be kicking herself for the second opportunity she missed.
The ball was given away in City’s midfield and Olislagers was played in two yards from goal, but for some reason tried to round the keeper. It went horribly wrong, and the golden chance went begging.
At this point Brighton had all of the play and it should have been 2-0, but then Khadija Shaw scored just before half-time.
City had the ball down the left flank and Greenwood delivered a delicious cross which was completely misjudged by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, and Shaw was there to head in to an open goal.
After that the game completely switched and Brighton never really had a chance. City doubled their lead straight after the break when Greenwood scored a direct free kick from the edge of the box. It was a decent finish, but more poor goalkeeping by Nnadozie, who certainly had an afternoon to forget.
The game felt finished at this stage, but City added two late goals to add insult to injury. Substitute Aoba Fujino rifled in a brilliant finish in the 66th minute, and Vivianne Miedema scored an open header in the box in the 87th minute.
In the end 4-0 reads like a thrashing, but it could have been so different for Brighton. They will rue their chances missed and feel that they could well have won the game in the first half.
But City made them pay and now Andree Jeglertz and his players can celebrate a historic double.
