Manchester City have beaten Fulham 20 times in succession across 17 league games, two FA Cup ties and one League Cup meeting, the longest such run in English football since 1888. The aggregate is 62-13.

NY Times reports on the human side, centring on lifelong Fulham supporter Bob Cain. His latest trip was his 558th consecutive Fulham match.

The sequence began in February 2012 amid heavy snow in Manchester. Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko scored, Chris Baird put through his own net, and after two stoppages to clear lines it finished 3-0.

Cain, 70, could not travel that day. He has attended the other 16 meetings, missing only a 2-0 defeat in January 2013 for a family matter and the two lockdown games.

City also hold 16 straight wins over Watford, including a 6-0 FA Cup final. Pep Guardiola has beaten Marco Silva 17 times, though the sequence began under Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini.

Fulham can still cherish April 2008, a 3-2 comeback from 2-0 at half-time at City sealed by Diomansy Kamara, then a 3-1 win the following season. They have not beaten City since, home or away.

City scarcely mentioned the 20, their focus on chasing Arsenal. Fulham now visit Stoke City in the FA Cup on Sunday, and Cain would rather avoid City in any subsequent draw.
