Manchester United have thrown their weight behind Trafford Council’s ambitious bid to host the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup, positioning the revamped Old Trafford as the centrepiece of the UK’s overall proposal to stage the showpiece tournament.

United to build new stadium

In March this year, United confirmed plans to leave Old Trafford and move to a new state-of-the-art 100,000-seater stadium.

The stadium, which will be the largest in the UK, is set to be constructed on land adjacent to Old Trafford. Award-winning architect Lord Norman Foster is leading the project.

United released designs of the stadium, which Sir Jim Ratcliffe has repeatedly branded ‘the Wembley of the North.’

It has been stated that the stadium will take five years to build and United have now confirmed their commitment to having the new stadium ready in time to host matches at the 2035 Women’s World Cup.

The English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh football associations formally submitted their joint bid to FIFA for the 2035 World Cup on Friday, although they were already all but guaranteed to host the tournament as the sole applicants.

United’s new stadium has been included as part of the shortlist for 2035 Women’s World Cup venues.

United statement

United’s chief operating officer, Collette Roche, said, “We are proud to be part of the rich sporting and cultural fabric of Trafford, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035 is a brilliant opportunity for us to showcase our home to the rest of the world.”

“Our ambition is to build a new 100,000-seater stadium fit to host the biggest international football games.”

“This will be part of a wider regeneration of the area around Old Trafford, with far-reaching benefits for the local community, Greater Manchester and surrounding region.”

“We also want to be a leader in the growth of women’s football, in our own neighbourhood and around the world.”

“All these objectives come together in Trafford’s bid to be a host city for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035, and we are looking forward to working with our partners in making this incredibly exciting vision a reality.”
