Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has named Casemiro as the current player he’d have liked to feature alongside.

Imminent exit

Casemiro is set to leave United at the end of the season, once his contract expires.

The Brazilian joined United in 2022 from Real Madrid in a deal worth around £70m. He enjoyed a fantastic debut season at Old Trafford, the highlight of which saw him score the opening goal in the 2023 Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle.

He also helped the Red Devils finish third in the Premier League and qualify for the Champions League. His performances slightly declined in the following campaign, although he still played a big part in the FA Cup final triumph over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Ruben Amorim somewhat revived him and he has continued improving under caretaker boss Michael Carrick. Casemiro scored United’s only goal as they were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle in the team’s most recent outing.

United had the option of extending his stay by an additional 12 months but opted against it, presumably due to their desire to offload his massive wages from the books.

Despite some of the challenges he has faced, there is no denying that the fans hold Casemiro in high regard. His professionalism and leadership have not gone unnoticed and at his best, there are few in the game who can match him in his position.

Robson spoke on the latest episode of Inside Carrington and explained why Casemiro is the one current player he’d have loved to share the pitch with.

Robson’s Casemiro claim

The iconic United captain said, “He’s got a great football brain, he’s tough, he’s good in the air and a great passer of the ball.”

“He knows the game – that’s why he was at Real Madrid and why he won as much as he did at Real Madrid.”

“I wish he was five years younger playing for this club.”

Robson also delivered his take on Carrick and the job he is doing so far in the dugout.

“Michael’s done great, because at United, when he’s been interim manager, he’s had eight wins and two draws [before Newcastle away].”

“When you look at the last time he was here [in 2021], he beat Villarreal away in Europe, came back and drew with Chelsea, at Chelsea, who were flying at the time. Then he beat Arsenal at Old Trafford and we all see what he’s doing now.”

“He’s doing it quite simply, but that’s because he’s got a great football brain. He went back to a back four, because the back three wasn’t suiting the boys. He put Luke [Shaw] back to left-back, which is his favourite position. Kobbie [Mainoo]’s come back into midfield – a young lad with great ability.”

“He was only out of the team because he got a bit rusty with injury.”

Robson continued, “The balance of the team is back and the results show that. So Michael’s done a great job, so far, and I hope he keeps doing it this season.”

“I hope he achieves the task of getting us into the Champions League, but he’s doing great at the moment.”

United return to action on Sunday, March 15, when they host Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
